Lindsey Vonn on the Cold and the Cool
By DANIELLE MATTOON

AFTER learning to ski on tiny Buck Hill in Minnesota, the Olympic skier Lindsey Vonn took her first ski trip to Keystone, Colo., when she was 7 years old. Since then, the gold medalist has gone on to ski all over the world, from her home in Vail, Colo., to the frigid slopes of Finland. Here, excerpts from an e-mail exchange on some highs and lows.

Q. Do you have a favorite ski day in the United States?

A. My all-time favorite ski day was definitely filming for a Warren Miller ski video on an amazing powder day in Vail last April. It was a bluebird day, and Vail got a lot of snow overnight. Since I am always traveling for the World Cup, I almost never get to be home and I don’t get to ski powder, either, so it was the perfect day.

Q. Do you have favorite runs?

A, My favorite ski run in the U.S. is International on the front face of Vail Mountain. It has always been an iconic run; they recently changed its name to Lindsey’s. My favorite run internationally is tied between the race track in Lake Louise, Canada, and the race track in St. Anton, Austria.

Q. If you were advising someone who has never skied in the United States on where to get the best out of the slopes here, what mountains would you suggest?

A. My top mountains in the U.S. would be Vail, Colo., for the best all-round mountain experience; Heavenly, Calif., for the best West Coast powder; Mount Hood, Ore., for the summer skiing and Breckenridge, Colo., for the best family experience.

Q. If you were teaching beginners to ski, where would you take them?

A. I am currently working on a ski school called Ski Girls Rock, a special girl-empowerment camp with all female instructors. The pilot program starts in Vail; we want to help girls with any level of skiing ability to find confidence on and off the slopes.

Q. What is the iciest run you’ve ever been down?

A. Well, all of the World Cup race runs are injected with ice to make for an even playing field for all the racers. Injected snow is definitely the iciest condition I have ever seen. In fact most skiers and coaches can’t stand on the hill because of the risk of sliding down.

Q. What is the coldest place you’ve ever been skiing?

A. Levi, Finland, is always a very cold race. The temperature can get below minus 39 degrees Celsius.

Q. What do you wear when it’s that cold?

A. I make sure I don’t have any skin exposed. I wear fleece neck gaiters and heavy Under Armour long underwear. Basically, I put as many layers on as I can. If I could wear boot heaters in my racing boots I would ...but unfortunately my boots are too tight to fit them in.

Q. Are there any places in the United States you’re dying to ski at but haven’t tried?

A. I’ve always heard that heli-skiing in Alaska is amazing. I would love to be able to do that at some point in my life.

Q. How about outside the United States?

A. Funny as it sounds, I would like to try skiing in an indoor ski-dome. I heard the one in Dubai is pretty cool. It’s not the mountains but I think I need to do it at least once!

Q. Best time of day to ski?

A. Lunchtime! Everyone is inside eating and the mountain is wide open.

Q. Best advice anyone has ever given you about skiing?

A. Just point your tips downhill :)
