A few of you who have met me in person know that my command of 中文 is awkward at times. So i am going to post this in English. I would very much like to hear of your comment.
Recently, I saw an announcement on Concordia Ski Club page on facebook, somebody was looking for two ski "coaches" to accompany a group of new Chinese students on a day trip to Owls Head. Owls Head being a favourite mountain of mine, i volunteered, so did another FB member.
It was agreed that our transportation and day pass would be paid for and that we would each be "assisting" 5 to 6 beginners for 2 hours max. At some point before the trip, I also paid for a $45 ticket for my 8 yo daughter to come along to ski with her dad.
We left for the trip yesterday on 2 rather uncomfortable school buses, unheated and not fit for long trips, took almost 3 hours to get there because apparently we had to have a snack break somewhere near exit 40. For reasons still unclear to me. The first of many strange things that day.
We got to ski sometime after 11am. Both the other volunteer and I were busy trying to work out who we were supposed to be assisting when seemingly 100 absolute beginners were storming the bunny hill and the chair lift. Some wearing jeans and most without even mitts. It was a disaster scene but we made do and managed to get a few, to actually get to a point where they were starting to enjoy it. Even taking 3 more capable ones out to the lake chair run. I managed 3 runs on my own with my daughter before the hill closed down. Feeling okay with the knowledge that i was able to help to the best of my ability, circumstances considered.
This morning, out of curiosity, i googled and found out that the trip had been organised by a for profit group "愛蒙城" advertising...

I am a certified instructor, though i never mentioned it when i volunteered. Neither do i feel that the kind of rush survival instruction that i was only able to gave warrants any fee that some of the trip participants might actually have paid to the organiser.
I feel bad. I feel bad even though there were no transaction of money. I feel bad for the participants, it wasn't an ideal introduction to ski. And i have that 被利用的感觉.
Thank you for listening. If you are one of the participants, I apologise sincerely.
