This is an excellent piece posted by sonic. If you live around Toronto and would like to see a brown bear because they are not around here go up to 400 and then 11 pass Severn Bridge when you just enter the Gravenhurst side of the Severn River you will see on your right hand side a big sign called "Muskoka Wildlife Centre".. This is aplace for refuge animals - ie if these aniaml are released they will not survive becuase they have either a disability etc There is a brown bear in there - a handsome guy who shares an area with a cougar. The brown bear was kept there becuase someone had kept him as a pet when he was young and he could no longer be released into the wild and survive. Go see him and a number of other animals and at 3 p.m. they have a meet the anilmal show where they will bring out differenct animal (like a skunk who had cancer of his scent gland so he no longer can defend himself in the wild). I had a great time visiting it and your children will love it too. Cost is around 12 dollars to enter. At least you can get to watch the brown bear there. When I last talked to them in Sept they told me thery are open everyday till thanksgiving and then every wekend hereafter.
I saw wild black bear in Mont Tremblant a number of years ago during a year when the berries were scarce. They came down all the way to the hotel area near the lake and I had doggies with me walking on the road. We quickly turned the corner and the bear went the other way. Luckily the wind was favourable neither my doggies nor the bear could smell each other but we were abour 30 feet apart. Also in the national parks in the west we have seen quite a few of them and saw mama bear taking three little ears crossing the street. Those were black bears. The grizzilies were the ones to fear. If you camp out in the west and go to the washroom in the campgrounds, be careful of them.
