I will be entering the city of Santiago tomorrow and visited the cathedral of St james and there will be a pilgrim mass at noon.  I met many interesting people along the way from all over the world.  Today it was scary as my boot gave up - it went kaput after 96 km.  But I did pack another pair so I am lucky.  On the trail luckiy I have a lanyard and used it to tie my sole back to the boot.  By the time I reached the end of todayçs walk, there were only 1 inche left for the sole to completely split off the shoe.  Along the way I saw many shoes broken and left on the milestone.  It is a great experience. Adios...

Entered Santiago de Compostela today.  Santiago in Spanish means St James.  It is said that his relics is buried in the cathedral.  Visited the crypt where his body was buried and hugged the saint.  Said a prayer and attended the pilgrim´s mass.  I took Warp´s ashes with me and spread them along the way where the milestones were.  Great to make a trip with no. 1 son. It has been raining all day and lots of pilgrims from everywhere.  Got my certificate of pilgrimage as well.   Now can relax for a couple of days before going to Finnisterre. God bless.

Went to Finisterre and back - a beautiful fishing port with only 3 000 people.  Final place for Captain Warp to rest.  Met some guys from Girona in Cataland.  They walked for 1000 km.  met some very interesting as well as bikers too.  Back to Santiago and go to Madird tomorrow.

Yes I have taken many pictures but I will enter them when I return.  I have been in Madrid for 2 days now.  I must say I am very impressed with Madrid - Spain is full of history and was a powerful country in the 17 18 century.  The city is full of beautiful architecture and the museums are fabulous.  I have learned a lot about Spain and certainly to revisit it again someday when my Spanish is better.  The things are cheap here by Canadian standarnd and I also saw quite a few demonstrations as the economy of Spain is going for the worse. Be back on the weekend.

Thanks guys for keeping in touch.  I feel like in a different world and it is.  Spain is very impressive to me.  I learn so much coming to Madrid.  I know very little about the history of Spain but I can see the grandeur of the Spanish imperial empire in the old days in Madrid and its relations with the other European powers.  The empire it has in America - mostly central and sourth amercia is enormous and it was one of the strongest powers during Columbus´s time.   It has a unique culture and the domininance of the Catholic religion.  Its struggle agianst the Moors  of Islamic faith.  The stories are so many and so fascinating.   Madrid is very safe - full of police presence.  I have been warned about petty crimes but I do not see it in Madrid.  The Palace Real I saw is definitely one of the most ornamented in Europe - however they have very strict rules about photography and I cannot take pictues of the inside of the museum.  The decorations are exiquisite.  There are so many kings and queens that I get their names and relationships all mixed up.  I do see quite a quite Chinese tourist in Madrid. I went to a shop run by Chinese ( mandarin speaking).  Spaniards are proud and have a fiery temperament.  They are open and lovely and it must be the influence of the sun.  It is hot and dry in Madrid but it was wet and cool in Santiago.   The Cathedral of Madrid is magnificent.  Right next to the palace.  I also visited their museum at the National Library -  it has a display of Da Vinci´s drawing and echeting.  The museums for art I visited three of the them and each one is a national treasure.  Spain has produced some of the most influencial artists in the Western world - from Velasque to Goya to Picasso to Dali to Miro... Art is Spain´s heritage.   I find Barcelona not comparable to Madrid in terms of its richness in archetecture and heritage even though it has the Gaudi archetecture.  Madrid  is really magnificent and I find the travel books did not emphasis its greatness as a European destination.   Anyway I am homeward bound - it is my last night here.  See you soon.

Try if picture can be attached.  OK it seems to be working.  I can put more pictures in now.  The first picture just shows some of the farm/country houses we passed through.  The cabbage is special for Galicia and is used to make the Galician soup - the pilgrim's soup with potato and is very delicious.

This is the Monument built on top of a mountain when you descend to go to Santiago.  There is an old church and it goes downhill from here.  The Pope visited this place ( forgot when) and they therefore built the monument.

Next picture is where my hiking boot fell apart on the 7th (or 8th day)  day of continuous hiking.  I used a lanyard to tie it back on the trail and it made to the hotel.  Luckily I brought along another pair of boots! God is on my side.

That incense container is spectaculer - there are 8 people operating it at the end of mass during the blessing ceremony and it is operated so that the incense burner swings the whole of the width of the cathedral without hitting the ceiling of the cathedral.  Everyone was in awe when we saw it and everyone is filming it.  I have a video but I do not subscribet to U tube so I only post the picture.  The is the most spectacular show I show.  If you go to U tube maybe other people has posted it.  Also it can see a bit of it in the move "The Way" by Martin Sheen distributed early this year.   The incense is to purify the pilgrims who in the old days can be smelly and dirty walking all the way to the church.  Just about 10 km outside Santiago, there is a place called Lavacolle which means "washing your body" where pilgrims will bath in the river before entering the city.   And there is also a habilt that pilgrims burn their clothes in Finisterre at the end of the journey.
The old church, and there are many of those along the El Camino, is made of stone I think and then mud as well.  It was built like a fortress as Portamarin is probably an important spot in the old days - a very old town.  It is perched on a hill and there are rivers running down so it is a strategic spot..

Yes I had the best Paella at a restaurant where the Pope has gone in Santiago.  It was quite a classy restaurant.  It has beautiful seafood on it.  I will find some pictures of that.  It cost us 30 euros each with wine and so on ( 14 people sharing and 1 was free).  That was the most expensive meal I had in the trip.  YOu have to watch - many prices for paella but the cheap ones will not have have the good seafood.

One night I had lamb and it was simply delicious!  Made me think of you- the lamb eaters, except they made it into a stew and not BBQ!
