Found an old  book on ski injuries entitled "Clinical Symposia"  Skiing Injuries by Arthry E Ellison M.D. published  Volume 29 Number 3, 1977.  It is publised solely for the medical profession by CIBA, Dorval, Quebec.  CiBA us a pharmaceutical compnay. There are many interesting diagrams and it talks about the various injuries sustained by skiers like boot top fracture, ACL, shoulder, ankle etc. What is interesting is that there are more injuries in powder snow than on ice.

In terms of rates - in this  1977 publication, a general injury rate of 6 per 1000 ski-man days.  The rate is higher for novices than experts but there is also report that rate of experts are increasing.  Women have more injuries  7.9/1000 compared to men 4.9/1000.  But as expert women increases leading to lowering of women skier injuries.

Maybe we are not a "general" sample.  There may be more men in the group and therefore more men get injured.

Quite right.  I think the rate is influenced by the report rate too.  There may be chronic pain or injury which is not reported.  I am only reading the book very slowly as my eyes are recovering from surgery.  If I see more interesting things I will report.

That book is quite technical and said that knee injuries can be very difficult to pin point where is the problem.  However I suggest that he get a referral from a family doctor to see a sports medicine speicalist who can give him a good diagnosis.    He should not just go skiing but may need some physio therapy to get his muscle strong so as to help the knee.  There are exercises one can do lying down to strengthen the muscle holding up the knee cap etc.  Knee injuries take patience for recovery.
